Albany Police said the incident occurred shortly after 3 a.m. Saturday, July 30, near South Pearl and Schuyler streets.
Officers were initially called with reports of a man with a weapon. When they arrived they found the victim, identified as an Albany resident, unconscious and appearing to be having a seizure, police said.
Medics treated the man at the scene before he was taken to Albany Medical Center Hospital and admitted to the ICU.
Investigators quickly linked the attack to Torrence Williams, who they said punched the victim in the head and stole his cell phone.
Williams was arrested and arraigned in Albany City Criminal Court on one count of second-degree robbery.
He was later released to the supervision of the Albany County Probation Department.
